Use of и

I just came across the sentence "Хотя он и пообещал, он не пришёл" which translates to "even though he promised to come, he didn’t”. I'm confused as to why the word "и", which as far as I'm aware means "and", appears in this sentence, especially in such a strange place. Why is it used here? Thanks.

In this sentence, the complex conjunction "хотя и" was used. "Хотя и" contrasts the information that is contained in the dependent clause with the information from the independent clause.

"И" can express other meanings too. In this case, as already mentioned, it’s used with "хотя" which translates as even though. И can also mean “even”, for example Он и спасибо не сказал – He didn’t even say thank you
