What’s the difference between русский and российский?

Русский – belonging to the nation and the land


Российский (паспорт, гражданство) – belonging to the state and government

Русский refers to the Russian ethnicity whereas российский indicates the country

Example: you were born in the US, as well as your parents. You can get Russian passport – российский паспорт – but you won’t be able to become русский (because it’s not your ethnicity)
